Middle School Mayhem is Saturday

The Staunton-Augusta Family YMCA’s Middle School Mayhem, formerly Saturday Night Madness, is back this weekend with a new name and all new games.

YMCA Teen Center supervisor Eddie Santiago thought Saturday Night Madness needed re-branding.

It’s now Middle School Mayhem.

The teens thought it needed a makeover, the type of touch only teens could provide.

Part of the YMCA’s commitment to youth development is empowering teens and giving them ownership of things inside of the YMCA. Santiago created a teen planning committee and turned them loose.

The teen committee’s first planned event, a special Middle School Mayhem earlier in September, was a huge success.

Mr. Eddie gave them a budget, and the teens got to work.

“I didn’t come up with this plan. The kids did,” Santiago said. “They came in here and said, ‘Hey Mr. Eddie, we want to be a part of this. We want a different theme. We want to do something different, because it’s getting boring.”

The changes breathed new life into the event.

“We wanted to try to new things, and new activities, instead of having the main focus be basketball,” Dominic, a middle schooler, said. “We wanted to try to get new foods and new themes. We thought if new kids would come if they wanted to try new themes.”

The teens loved taking initiative to plan for their friends.

“We wanted a photo backdrop thing, and we ordered props for people to take pictures with,” said Emmie, a local middle schooler on the planning committee. “I think they liked the music and the difference.”

Santiago loves taking the kids take action.

“These are there peers,” he said. “They know what their peers want. They did a really good job, and I’m excited to see what they have planned.”

Middle School Mayhem begins at 7:15 pm and ends promptly at 9:45 pm. The cost is $1 per member and $3 per non-members.
